The lagoon of Messolonghi is from an ecological and economic point of view one of the most important lagoons of the Mediterranean. It is a classic case of a habitat where human intervention is evident and affects the character of the lagoon since all current actions in this area are adapted to the changes imposed by these interventions.
The anthropogenic interventions that have taken place in the Messolonghi lagoon were either central government options aimed at changing the use of the lagoon and turning it into arable land, whether they arose as a result of other interventions or were smaller-scale interventions from activities in the area or around it.
The region is one of the largest and most important regions of the country and Europe. It is under protection (NATURA2000) and is one of the most vulnerable areas to anthropogenic influences. However, the published information does not reflect the size and importance of the area.
In the present study, an attempt to record all the published information concerning abiotic and biotic factors of the Mesolongi-Aetoliko lagoon complex is made and to specify the anthropogenic effects on the biodiversity of the area.
